Prague’s Old Town and the Old Town Square developed over the centuries around the central marketplace. Rising as the centerpiece of the Old Town Square, the tower of the Gothic-style Town Hall soars 42 meters into the air. A particular highlight is the Astronomical Clock, which has captivated onlookers with its colorful appearance since 1410.
After the clock’s creator, Master Hanuš, had finished the timepiece, he explained his design to the Prague city councillors. They all agreed that they had never seen such an impressive work. Although Hanuš professed himself overjoyed simply to have been able to complete this single masterpiece, a preemptive jealousy began to gnaw at the councillors.
As Hanuš soon began receiving offers from various cities for new tower clocks, they conspired to commit a heinous act. One night, hired criminals broke into the master’s bedchamber and gouged out both his eyes. Although Hanuš survived the cowardly attack, he languished thereafter.
Yet finally, he roused himself for one last act: he had himself led to the clock, and as it struck the hour and the intricate mechanism began to move, he placed his hand into the works—and instantly, the mechanism ground to a halt with a hideous crunch. Master Hanuš was taken back home, where he died shortly thereafter.
The Clementinum was once a Jesuit college. Today, it houses the National Library as well as several academic institutes.
