Pantanal

Today we flight from Rio to the federal state Mato Grosso in the largest wetland of the world, the Pantanal. With 230.000km2 the area is almost three times as big as Austria. Through the Pantanal leads a heaped road, the Transpantaneira, 145 km into the Pantanal.

There are more than 665 species of birds in this unique natural paradise, more than in all of Europe. The Pantanal has the largest occurrence of Hyacinth Macaws in Brazil. Among the approximately 123 species of mammals are the predators of jaguar, puma and ocelot, and their prey such as swamp deer, pekaris and capybaras. Furthermore, there are at least 2000 plant species, 269 fish species, countless reptiles and amphibians and a variety of insects. The bird Jabiru, the giant stork, is the symbol of the Pantanal. Caimans and Alligators populate this area with 35 million specimens.
