The Mount Cook. The King of the Southern Alps. With 3.764m, the Mount Cook is the highest mountain in the country. How many prominent peaks of this mountain also plays into the mythology of the indigenous Maori, a special role.
According to an ancient legend Aroangi and his companions drove with one canoe across the Pacific. The boat was too big and too heavy for the occupants, so that the canoe got stuck on the seabed and became the South Island of New Zealand. Aorangi and his companions petrified and became to the peaks of the Southern Alps.
The Maoris named the Aorangi Mount Cook, but since 1850 the highest mountain in the country carries the name after the first white man who has reached New Zealand.
