In the Kluane Nationalpark there are a lot of sick Sitka spruce. It was summer of 1992 when residents and visitors noticed that many local spruce were dying. The cause was a tiny beetle, hardly as big as a grain of rice. As it had done at different times in various parts of North America's boreal forest, the spruce bark beetle was experiencing a population explosion. Over subsequent summers, people were amazed and concerned about the number of trees this insect was killing. What would stop it?
